OVER 500 TURN OUT FOR CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

Tuesday, Dec. 12. Over 500 - by some counts as many as 700 - concerned citizens from all over Athens-Clarke turned out for the candlelight vigil at City Hall on Tuesday evening to show their disappointment with the Commission's 6-4 vote for sprawl, and to express support for a reversal of the zoning decision. Everyone stood quietly on the steps and sidewalks from 6 to 6:30. At about 6:30, a vigil participant announced that the Commissioners, who were inside City Hall preparing for their agenda setting meeting, had declined his invitation to come out to the steps and acknowledge the gathering. The vast majority of the crowd followed his suggestion to file through the Commission chamber so the Commissioners could see, without leaving their seats, how many citizens had turned out for the vigil.
